The Census

You should have already carried out a number of surveys using different sampling methods and seen that varying the sampling method and the size of the sample will yield different estimates of the distribution of attitudes among the citizens.

You can now compare your own results with the true distribution of attitudes. You will be shown the distribution of attitudes for the whole population of the town obtained by carrying out a survey of everyone (a Census).

To compare the relative costs of the different sampling methods, you will need to know how much each survey costs. You will be shown some relevant facts to help work this out.

The sampling procedures are:

  1. simple random sampling
  2. clustered random sampling
  3. stratified random sampling
  4. quota sampling
  5. summary and finish
