Thank you very much for attending ESSA 2009 at Guildford and making it a great success.
After the revolution!
Computer simulation is a powerful tool for helping us understand aspects
of society (both observed and in the abstract). However, how best to do
this and under what conditions it is useful are still open questions.
The 6th European Social Simulation Association Conference will, like
its predecessors, attract the best papers from across the world,
describing the newest and most significant social simulation work. The
papers will cover a wide range of social subjects: human, animal and
artificial, and apply a wide range of simulation techniques.
The methodology and, indeed, the very nature of the enterprise will be
discussed and debated. The simulations described will go from the
extremely abstract to the most specific and practical. Results and
ideas from social simulation are starting to inform
real life decisions (for good or ill) and there will be, no doubt, considerable discussion
about this. A hot issue will be how and when one should compare a
simulation to evidence.
Social Simulation seems to be at a "tipping point" between revolutionary
and normal science where it is trying to introduce more care and rigour
into its methods. Come participate in the formation of a new science!

Poster Session
There will be an open poster session at the conference. All displayed posters will be automatically entered into a competition for the "Best Poster Award", with a prize of 300 euros.
Student Prizes
ESSA will offer up to 5 bursaries each worth £500 (c. €600) to PhD students
who are the principal author of an accepted paper.
In addition, all PhD students who are principal authors will be considered for a "Best Student Paper - ESSA 2009" award at the conference.
Also, ESSA and Volterra Consulting have created the annual "Volterra Consulting Replication Prize". In order to be eligible for the prize, worth 500 euros, applicants must attempt to replicate a published social simulation.
Tutorials
The tutorials are planned for Monday morning September 14, 2009 just before the start of the 2009 European Social Simulation Association conference, in Guildford UK. For details visit the 'Tutorials' page
The tutorials will only run if there are sufficient participants, so if you are interested in attending one, you must email Lu Yang
to note your intention to attend and the title of the tutorial by 1st September. All the tutorials run in parallel, from 9.00 to 12:30, so that it is only possible to attend one.
