Over the last ten years Katya has built extensive experience of social research and project management within the third sector, academia and consultancy. She holds a PhD in Sociology and an MA in Sociological Research Methods from the University of Essex, which provided the foundations of her skills in social research. Throughout her career she has sought to pursue her interests in social and environmental justice, education and community-based participatory, reflexive and interdisciplinary approaches to research. Her doctoral thesis 'Considering Cultural Collision: Education and the Innu of Labrador', investigates the impact of settler-colonial policies on the Innu community of Sheshatshiu in Labrador, Canada.

Katya comes to the University of Surrey fresh from a year’s career break exploring South America, learning Spanish, volunteering on farms, and befriending a vast number of the continent’s dogs and cats along the way.
