SAMP will help you see the effect of using different methods of sampling on the results from a survey.

There are 11042 adults in the town of Little Stripling-under-Wey, according to a recent census. You are interested in the attitudes of the people in this town to a proposal to redevelop its centre.

You are to find the attitudes of the citizens using four sampling methods in turn. The members of each sample will be interviewed by the computer and a score for the mean of the sample will be calculated. You will then be able to estimate the attitude of the town as a whole from your sample.

You don't have the resources to include more than 10 per cent of the town's population at any one time.

At the end, you will be given data on the overall attitudes of the whole town to compare with the estimates you will have obtained from your samples. You will also get some guidance on the costs of carrying out surveys.

The sampling procedures are:

  1. simple random sampling
  2. clustered random sampling
  3. stratified random sampling
  4. quota sampling
  5. summary and finish
